Preakness Stakes 2018

The 143rd running of the 2018 Preakness. An agreement among sportsmen to stage a special race became the foundation for the middle jewel of racing's Triple Crown. In 1873, two years before the Kentucky Derby would appear, Pimlico was busy introducing its new stakes race, The Preakness. The tradition continues at America's second-oldest race track and has become a trademark on America's horse racing calendar. Join us at the 2018 Preakness and watch the nation's best three-year-olds compete in the time-honored rite to win the 2nd Leg of the Triple Crown!

Preakness Stakes Horse Race 2018
You're 'Off to the Races.' Two (2) passes to attend the Preakness Stakes in Baltimore, MD on Saturday, May 20, 2018. The Preakness is the second jewel in horse racing's much sought-after Triple Crown. You will be seated on the Club House Turn at Pimlico Race Track with access to the infield where you can view the winner circle before the race starts.

Around 114 seconds after 11 horses break from the gates at Pimlico Race Course at 5:45 p.m. CDT Saturday, the Belmont Stakes will be the biggest race on the 2018 thoroughbred calendar or merely the running of the longest of the American classic events

Preakness Stakes 2018 Contenders

The Preakness Stakes 2018 takes what we think we know and turns it on its head. At a mile and a half, the race is a true test of endurance. Contenders that look unbeatable in the Kentucky Derby or the Preakness arrive in New York only to look all-too-average by the finish line.

Will that be the case with Exaggerator, as well? The 3-year-old colt trained by Keith Desormeaux and ridden by his brother, jockey Kent Desormeaux, appears to pick up steam as a race progresses. Had the Kentucky Derby lasted a little longer, today we might be talking about Exaggerator going for a Triple Crown on Saturday rather than just adding another point to an already long list of accomplishments.

New York Racing Association odds maker Eric Donovon has set the morning line odds at 9-5 in Exaggerator's favor, which sounds great. Until you convert that into a percentage and find that is slightly more than a 35 percent chance Exaggerator is crowned in the blanket of carnations after the race. The field has a 65 percent chance of pulling off an upset.

It's not uncommon for a number of horses who ran in the Kentucky Derby to skip the Preakness. So, after a 20-horse field, filling both the main and auxiliary gates at Churchill Downs, only 11 horses were entered at Pimlico two weeks later. Of those, only a handful (Nyquist, Exaggerator, Lani) were Derby carryovers. It just doesn't make sense for most trainers to push a horse into three races across a scant five weeks.

And with hopes of a Triple Crown dashed for Nyquist, the Kentucky Derby winner who opened his career 8-for-8 -- as well as concerns over his health after a high white blood cell count and fever following the Preakness -- only Exaggerator and Lani will be entering all three races.

They'll welcome back from familiar faces, however. Suddenbreakingnews finished 4-1/2 lengths out of the Derby and has 10-1 odds. Destin finished about two lengths back of him in sixth. The Todd Pletcher trained horse has 6-1 odds. Brody's Cause, who was seventh in the Derby at about 9 lengths back, will compete, as well. He's at 20-1 odds. Creator, a Steve Asmussen trained horse, finished 13th in Kentucky at 18 lengths back. He's got 10-1 odds on Saturday.

Watch 2018 Preakness Stakes Video where Trainer Steve Asmussen's 3-year-old won the 148th running of the Test of Champions in the fourth photo finish in Preakness Stakes history after jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. gave his charge a push at just the right time to edge Destin and win in 2 minutes, 28.51 seconds.

Lani, the Japanese colt, finished in third 1-3/4 lengths back. Preakness winner Exaggerator finished 11th of 13 on the 1-1/2 mile dirt track, nearly 14 lengths back.

As expected, Gettysburg took a quick lead out of the gate and led by a length after the first quarter mile (24.09 seconds) and held that lead at a half-mile (48.48). Gettysburg continued to lead down the back stretch, crossing 3/4 miles in 1:13.38 and 1 mile at 1:37.96.

Destin took the lead coming down the front stretch, while Creator made a late charge to force a photo finish.

After American Pharoah won all three Triple Crown races last year, the crown was divided evenly in 2016. Nyquist won the Kentucky Derby, but finished several lengths back in his next race. Exaggerator won the Preakness, but finished outside the top three in the Preakness.

Preakness Stakes 2018 Results

Triple Crown winner didn't appear this 2018 due to different horses taking the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, but the 1 1/2-mile Test of the Champion is always worth a watch and that was no different on Saturday. Creator, the winner of the Arkansas Derby, came from behind to win the race by a nose, the fourth nose finish in the race's history.

Creator narrowly beat out Destin for the win, as close as can be. Destin was considered an early front-runner and chased Gettysburg for most of the race before taking the lead down the stretch. But Creator stalked him down for the victory.

The top three was Creator, Destin and Lani. Through much of the pre-race buildup, Lani was considered one of the biggest challengers for Exaggerator, the favorite for much of the pre-race buildup. But while Exaggerator kept with the pace for much of the race, the horse couldn't finish and was soon passed by the top finishers, and eventually most of the pack.

Gettysburg threw a wrench into the odds when he was entered into the race. A late entrant, Gettysburg became the new pace setter and was just that, taking an early lead in the race before fading late. Gettysburg is owned by WinStar Frams, same as Creator. Many felt that it was a strategy move to put Gettysburg in to set the pace for Creator, a notable closer who did just that: closed, and he did it well.

The hype this year was obviously a lot less than 2015, when American Pharoah entered the Preakness with a chance at a Triple Crown on the line. American Pharoah did eventually win the Preakness to become the first horse to win the Triple Crown since Affirmed did it in 1978. But after Nyquist took home the win in the Kentucky Derby this year, Exaggerator played spoiler by taking the Preakness Stakes.

We were denied the all-important rubber match when Nyquist was pulled from this year's race due to a fever and a high white blood cell count. Exaggerator was then considered the prohibitive favorite in the race and held that through the pre-race buildup and into race day. Cherry Wine, Suddenbreakingnews and others moved up and down the odds, but Exaggerator held firm up top.

2018 Preakness Stakes Winner

The 150th running of the 2018 Preakness Stakes is in the books. The third leg of the Triple Crown ended in dramatic fashion. Nyquist took the Kentucky Derby while while Exaggerator took the Preakness. On Saturday, Creator won by a nose.

Nyquist was out of the Preakness Stakes due to illness, which left the 13-horse field wide open, though two of the top horses constantly brought up were Exaggerator and Suddenbreakingnews. The former was a favorite entering the race with 6-5 odds while the latter had 5-1 odds to win.

Destin had a very good beginning, followed by Gettysburg. At the end of the first turn, Gettysburg had a notable lead. But Destin never let up, leading the race for the majority of the time. Exaggerator spent most of the race in fifth place, about two lengths away from first place.

But as Destin was nearing the end of the race, Creator came seemingly out of nowhere. Creator stormed up from the outside towards the end of the race so they couldn't immediately call the winner.

When is Preakness Stakes in 2018?

The 2018 Preakness Stakes is an annual horse race held at Preakness Park in Elmont, New York. The race is an American Grade I Thoroughbred horse race and features 3-yearold Thoroughbreds. A Thoroughbred is a breed of horses that is popular because of its ability to race as a result of their combination of agility, speed, and spirit. Colts and geldings in the Preakness horse race carry a weight of 126-lbs (57-kiliograms) while the fillies carry 121-lbs (55 kilograms). The Preakness race track is 1.5 miles (2.4 kilometers) long.

The Preakness Stakes, sometimes referred to as The Test of the Champion, is the 3rd and final race of the Triple Crown. The two other legs are the Kentucky Derby (5-weeks prior) and the Preakness Stakes (3-weeks prior). The Preakness horse race is always held on a Saturday between June 5th-11th.

2018 Preakness Stakes Online

The 2018 Preakness Stakes will be televised on NBC beginning at 5 p.m. ET and can be streamed online using NBC Live Extra. The horses go to post at approximately 6:37 p.m.

After Nyquist, winner of the Kentucky Derby, dropped out due to a fever and a high white blood cell count, this year's race was expected to feature a 12-horse field. That changed earlier in the week when WinStar Farms entered Gettysburg late. Many considered it a potential strategy move, as Gettysburg is a pace-setter while WinStar's other horse in the race, Creator, is a stalker who closes strong.

In other words, Gettysburg could set a blistering pace, fade nearer the end and Creator could come out on top. But even if that was the strategy, WinStar comes out ahead if another strong closer and favorite to win this year's race, Exaggerator, comes out on top. WinStar owns the studding rights for Exaggerator and would benefit from another victory for the horse, who took the rain-soaked Preakness Stakes over Nyquist just three weeks ago.

There's also the fact that Cherry Wine and Suddenbreakingnews, two of the other favorites in the race, are also considered strong closers and are starting far inside in the draw, while Exaggerator will be running from post No. 11. Gettysburg comes in at post No. 6 and will definitely be a horse to watch early, but all eyes will be on Exaggerator throughout the race.

Exaggerator has been the favorite since Nyquist dropped out, and that didn't change even when he was drawn outside. Last year's winner, American Pharoah, won from the fifth post, but the winners in the two years prior were both in outside posts. No horse has won from the first post since 2003. This year, Governor Malibu, jockeyed by Joel Rosario, occupies that top spot.
